(Three candidates are on the ballot: the machine candidate Joe Harrison (Earle S.Dewey), McMurphy, and Willie Stark.)During whistle-stop campaigning for the position, Willie speaks to the people about a "balanced ax program," but urns off potential voters by his wooden and leaden style and reliance on facts and statistics.Dusty from travel, he wears blue, yellow-striped cavalry britches.His faded, gray Confederate military cape/over-cloak reveals a red sergeant""s chevron, and his saber hangs at his side in its scabbard.O""Daniel in a shabby, flea-bitten hotel room.Joe boasts to O""Daniel:Uh, well, sir, I-I ain""t a for-real cowboy.But I am one helluva stud.O""Daniel senses Joe Buck""s loneliness, and then challenges him: "I""m gonna use ya.I""m gonna run you ragged...You and me can have fun together.It doesn""t have to be joyless." A religious fanatic (and homosexual Jesus-freak Christian), guilt-ridden O""Daniel ries to force Joe to join him and together pray on their knees in front of a garish, blinking plastic sign of Christ hanging on the back of his bathroom door:I""ve prayed on the streets." When the Israeli pilot was momentarily distracted, his jet was shot down over the Syrian desert, and the flaming wreckage (including the unexploded bomb) was eventually hidden by blowing sand.
