Lebrand: Like a dog.Sullivan: What do they know in Pittsburgh?Lebrand: They know what they like.Sullivan: If they knew what they liked, they wouldn't live in Pittsburgh.That's no argument.The well-established, top-money director, known for comedies, wants to make a serious, solemn and meaningful film ("a million dollar production") for his next effort, but it is almost sacrilegious for him to suggest to a Hollywood production boss a realistic film "as he sociological and artistic medium that it is" depicting the drama of suffering, hardship, and poverty.For his impressive efforts, Indiana Jones-look-alike lead robber (named "Fedora" in the script) respectfully gave the young lad his Fedora hat, and told him: "You lost today, kid, but it doesn't mean you have to like it." She responded to him: "Gee, I don't know.Maybe.This sure is a friendly town." Ned quickly apologized - and she was slightly hurt: "You mean the offer's no good?" Then she added: "You must be looking for the lady of the house"; as "Matty" walked up to hem (and handed Mary Ann an envelope - a payoff?); after Mary Ann left, "Matty" explained that Mary Ann was "an old friend, she's like a sister to me.Returning home at four in the morning, Roy is ecstatic and wakens his sleepy wife, unable to calm down: "Honey, Ronnie.Toward its furious ending, Drew admits o the grinning boy: "I'm lost." When Drew, seen as a suspicious stranger, compliments the moon-faced winner when they are done - "God damn, you play a mean banjo," the mute, inbred, half-witted boy resumes his stony stare, turns his head sharply, and refuses o shake hands with the interloping foreigner.
