The marvelous sound work on the film was deserving of an Oscar for Best Sound for its effective sound-mixing of interdependent elements: taped conversations, muffled voices, background and other mechanically-generated noises, musical/piano accompaniment (Harry Caul""s signature theme) and other ambient sounds.In the hallway by the elevator, the arrogant Gittes has an opportunity to bait and speak insulting words to Claude Mulvihill (Roy Jenson), the city""s water department enforcer, whose own personal water supply has been shut off:How""d you find out about it? You don""t drink it.[In the play, Maggie had allegedly seduced Skipper, an instance of heterosexual infidelity - to keep theirhomosexualrelationship at bay - an important plot element missing in the film.The two made their way through a sea of local workers in pale pink lab coats and hats, and when confronted by Mackie, they knocked him out and Cross stole his expensive gold watch.
