《《Whipsaw (1935)》》Storyline
Plot SynopsisThe credits play over a lace doily, after which the film""s setting in the mid-nineteenth century is introduced:1847In the gay half-world of Paris, the gentlemen of the day met the girls of the moment at certain theatres, balls and gambling clubs, where the code was discretion - - but the game was romance. After the hapless husband Jake calls for a truce with his wife, things calm down.Consumed with bitter anger, Jake complains to Joey about what""s wrong - that he will never be "the best there is" because he has "girl""s hands":Jake: What""s wrong with me? My hands.Ferrari: Too bad. That""s Casablanca""s leading commodity. In refugees alone, we could make a fortune, if you work with me through the black market.Rick: Suppose you run your business and let me run mine.Ferrari: Suppose we ask Sam.Maybe he""d like to make a change?Rick: Suppose we do.Ferrari: My dear Rick, when will you realize that in this world, oday, isolationism is no longer a practical policy?Sam is asked about his loyalties, and steadfastly wishes o remain with Rick ("I like it fine here").[Note: Some of the original performers, Tim Curry, Patricia Quinn and Little Nell Campbell, also appeared in the subsequent film.In another meeting with his officers in the ward-room of the ship [the scene foreshadowed the similar scene of his testimony in the court-martial trial], Queeg (with shot nerves) delivered a confessional entreaty (a semi-apology) to his men for their help and loyalty, but his request was greeted by stony silence:I know that some of you are perhaps a little afraid of me.
