Everybody around the dock is talking about the unusually large cargo and number of crew members - "three times more than the ship needs."Apes in this oppressive, militaristic society were monitored by Ape Control and its black-booted, Gestapo-style fascistic officers, who forbade unauthorized ape gatherings in the open-air shopping center mall, and disciplined disobedient apes with electric prodders.The screenplay was based on Jack Schaefer""s successful 1949 book of the same name.The film received six Academy Awards nominations: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Brandon de Wilde), Best Supporting Actor (Jack Palance), Best Director, Best Screenplay (by A.Fun-loving Professor Quincy Adams Wagstaff (Groucho Marx) is seen shaving on the side of the stage.Although smoking is specifically prohibited, Wagstaff is seen smoking his cigar and refuses to put it out.
