They were making demands of the French government, while threatening to explode a Hydrogen bomb (hidden in an oil drum) and level the city.The marvelous sound work on the film was deserving of an Oscar for Best Sound for its effective sound-mixing of interdependent elements: taped conversations, muffled voices, background and other mechanically-generated noises, musical/piano accompaniment (Harry Caul's signature theme) and other ambient sounds.He boyishly picks up a rock and throws it into a vacant field.In a hospital sickbed, the man who suffered he seizure - Mr.Tom Beaumont (Jack Harvey) is hospitalized.Unable o speak, he is connected to a oxygen-mask breathing device (a foreshadowing!) and his head is held perfectly still and incapacitated [in sexual erms - he is emasculated].When he returned to his run-down residence, he was questioned at the front stoop by occupants of the local whorehouse, who asked: "Is hat yours? What's its name?" He didn't answer, went inside, paused, and then returned with a one-word reply: "John.In a series of confrontational closeups, he tells them of the cattle rustling and implies in a subtle exchange that his duty as newly-appointed Marshal is to find his brother's murderers.
